John DaughertyHappy New Year! 2009 is a year of celebration, memories, and heritage. First Baptist Church will celebrate 115 years as a body of believers ministering to her neighbors in Fort Myers. In addition, we join with millions of Baptist brothers and sisters of every sort, race, nationality and conviction in celebrating 400 years of the Baptist movement.

In 1609 a small group of English Christians living in Amsterdam, Holland began meeting for worship and study in a bake-house and that year their little church held its first baptism of adult believers. All had been baptized as infants and were obligated members of the Church of England. But through their study of the New Testament and conviction came to believe in the baptism of believers and were then at odds with the official church. Their refusal to adhere to the demands and requirements of the state church caused them to be subject to fines, whippings, and imprisonment. These dissenters became the first Baptists. In 1612 Thomas Helwys, one of the original dissenters, published the tract A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity, the first document written in English that called for complete religious freedom. And Baptists have been champions of freedom for 400 years.

On those powerful foundations and rich histories we now build a dynamic present and plan for a fruitful future. The Ministries of Music and Worship are being developed into dynamic and exciting aspects of our over-all ministry at First Baptist. Joseph Caulkins and the choir, the musicians, other worship leaders are improving the worship experience and working to make that time one of engagement as a body and a joyous expression of praise to our God. We are confronting challenges to growing our future with a commitment to stewardship and faithful efforts to having the resources we need to reach out and to build up.

All we need now is you! We need your family, your children, your teenagers, your faithful commitment to Christ and your willingness to be a part of this dynamic and loving family of faith. Give us a try. Hope to see you soon. In the meantime, give me a call or send an email with your questions and suggestions.

Grace and Peace,

John Daugherty, Pastor
